What
is dental care?
Basically,
dental care will involve
• Brushing and flossing teeth on a
regular basis,
• Seeing your dentist on a regular basis
for cleanings and checkups,
• Eating mouth healthy foods.
When
should your child start seeing the dentist?
When
you child reaches 12 months of age, or their first tooth erupts, you should
take him or her for the first dental visit. Scheduling regular visits to your
dentist every six months for your child will be beneficial. Your dentist will
assess your child’s dental health and recommend treatments, medications, and
the frequency of visits.
What
are the best ways to care for your teeth, mouth, and gums?
• Brush your teeth twice a day with a
fluoride based toothpaste for at least two minutes. This will help remove
dental plaque that causes tooth decay, and inflammation of the gums called
gingivitis. Brushing your teeth should be done first thing in the morning and
before bedtime.
• Flossing every day, before bedtime.
This will remove the plaque that is present between the teeth and near the gum
line. If plaque hardens, it will turn into tartar which can be only removed by
a dental hygienist with a professional cleaning.
• Limit the number of snack breaks you
take.
• For an oral exam and professional
cleaning, visit your dentist every six months on a regular basis.
Why
is visiting the dentist so important?
Taking
care of your teeth is more than just brushing and flossing. It is important to
visit your dentist at least every six months for a regular checkup and
professional cleaning. Professional cleaning will help you keep your gums
cleaner, make them last longer, and prevent painful dental problems from
developing.
